Barack Obama congratulates Michigan Wolverines on historic national title win

Former President Barack Obama sent his customary congratulatory message to the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team after their National Championship win.

Obama took to X, formerly Twitter, to congratulate the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team on their National Championship win, which capped off the 2026 March Madness tournament.

“Congratulations to [Dusty May], Elliot Cadeau, and [Michigan men’s basketball] on winning their first title since 1989! This team dominated the tournament from start to finish. Well deserved. Go Blue!” Obama wrote.

Obama, an avid sports fan, is accustomed to making these kinds of posts for championship-winning teams. It’s especially cool for guard Elliot Cadeau, who led the National Championship game with 19 points.

On Monday, Apr. 6, 2026, the Michigan Wolverines beat the UConn Huskies 69-63 to win the program’s first title since 1989. This also marked the program’s second-ever national title.

The national title capped Michigan’s historic 37-3 season. Their 37-win season was the most in the Wolverines’ history, and it tied the record for the most wins in a season with Illinois’ 2005 team.

Cadeau led the Wolverines with 19 points. He was efficient, making five of his 11 shots from the floor, including one from beyond the three-point line. He also had three rebounds and two assists. Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. both scored over 10 points, logging 13 and 12 points, respectively.

UConn put up a fight, but their inefficiency cost them. They made just 31% of their shots (21-68) from the floor, including going 9-33 from beyond the three-point line.

Michigan didn’t shoot significantly better from the three-point line, going 2-15. However, they made just as many shots (21) on 13 fewer attempts. That helped them edge out the victory. They also made 25 of 28 free throws, which is 12 more than the Huskies attempted.
