‘Panic right now’ – Jalen Hurts told he’s ‘going backwards’ after QB drops worst Eagles performance in 47 years

Jalen Hurts will be taking a long, hard look in the mirror after a historically poor performance on Monday night.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, who led his team to Super Bowl glory just 10 months ago, was embarrassed by the Los Angeles Chargers.

So bad were the Eagles as a unit, that Troy Aikman thinks Jason Kelce is solution to their woes.

Hurts turned the ball over five times in an excruciating 22-19 overtime loss which dropped Philly to 8-5 and potentially opened the door for a Dallas Cowboys comeback in the NFC East.

Inexplicably, the Super Bowl LIX MVP committed two of those turnovers on the same play.

Midway through the second quarter, Hurts threw an interception to Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand, who fumbled during the return. The QB recovered the ball, but then fumbled it back to Los Angeles once more as he was hit.

With that play, he made unwanted history.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Hurts is the first player to commit two turnovers on the same play dating back to 1978, which is as far as the statisticians could go.

His five turnovers also tied the most by an Eagles player since play-by-play was first tracked (also in 1978), matching a rookie Donovan McNabb in 1999.

It was certainly not the kind of performance that a defending Super Bowl champion would have liked under the primetime lights, in a season that many expected them to dominate.

In fact, all it did was prove the Eagles are going backwards with Hurts under center.

Time for Philly fans to hit panic button over under-performing Hurts

“Jalen Hurts is the 20th-best QB in the NFL right now — and that’s being kind,” talkSPORT’s Senior US Reporter, Brian T. Smith, said.

Make no bones about it, Jalen Hurts was BAD against the Chargers.

Five turnovers, and two on the same play, is historically poor. Laughable even, maybe for the Eagles quarterback himself.

Brian thinks it’s time for Philly fans to panic, but I’m not ready to give up on Hurts just yet.

He hasn’t been brilliant in 2025, but we all know that there’s enough around him to carry the Eagles to victory, even when he has an off day.

It still took the Changers an overtime interception to beat him, and on another night, things could easily have gone in his favor.

Philly will still make the postseason, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they put together another Super Bowl run.

Coach Sirianni has described football as ‘the ultimate team game’ — and he’s right. If the Eagles win, it’s not all on one person.

And if they lose, it can’t all be put on Hurts. You’ll be fine, Philly fans.

Oliver Browning, US Sports Writer

“He was perfect for the Eagles last year, but Hurts is going backward in 2025.

“There’s way too much tension with this team and the drama starts at the top. A.J. Brown has been calling out his offense and QB for two seasons.”

Smith, who touched on the long-running drama around Hurts and his wideouts, suggested it’s time for the Eagles to hit the panic button.

He continued: “On national TV, Hurts was horrible and committed five turnovers. Heck, he gave away the ball twice on one play!

“Hurts loves to be the calm and wise guy on stage. But Eagles fans have every right to panic right now, because Hurts is 20th in QB rating and there’s no way Philly is repeating if he keeps holding the offense back.”

Jalen Hurts takes accountability after MNF horror show

Speaking postgame, Philly’s QB admitted shouldered plenty of blame.

Where do Eagles rank as Super Bowl contender?

7. Philadelphia Eagles (8-4)

The most dramatic team in the NFL is at another breaking point.

Toughen up, Philly, and get it together.

talkSPORT ranks the best teams in the NFL after Week 14.

“I didn’t play well enough. Too many turnovers,” he admitted.

“Lots of opportunities, especially when we get on the other side of the 50 and I wasn’t able to get us in the box.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about how you respond to it. It definitely stings.”

Hurts has long been seen as a leader in the locker room, and coming out to face the music after MNF will further enhance that reputation.

But while he’s the model professional off the field, right now, he’s struggling on it. Against the Chargers, Hurts completed just 21/40 passes for 240 yards and four interceptions.

His QBR on Monday night was 31.3. Had he spiked the ball on every play, his rating would have been 39.6. Striking stats like that hammer home how badly Hurts played against Los Angeles.

But despite a primetime embarrassment, the Eagles remain top of the NFC East — at least for now.

Upcoming games against the 2-11 Las Vegas Raiders, and the Washington Commanders, who have lost their last eight games, should help Hurts get back on track.

But bigger tests will come in the playoffs, should Philly make it, and their QB will need to be firing on all cylinders for any chance of another Super Bowl run.
