Frederik Andersen drops ‘dreaming’ truth bomb after Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup win
For the first time since 2006, the Carolina Hurricanes are Stanley Cup champions, and they did so by utilizing both of their goaltenders during their Stanley Cup Final series victory over the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Hurricanes, who lost only three games during the postseason, suffered the fewest losses by any Stanley Cup winner since the Wayne Gretzky-led Edmonton Oilers in 1988.
It was goaltender Brandon Bussi who capped the series with a shutout performance in Game 6 at T-Mobile Arena; he replaced starter Frederik Andersen between the pipes midway through Game 3. However, Andersen was the first Hurricanes player to receive the Stanley Cup from captain Jordan Staal, who also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as postseason MVP.
Afterward, Andersen admitted that he was having a hard time distinguishing what he was experiencing as that of a dream or reality.
“I’ve still got to figure out if I’m dreaming or not,” Andersen said via Chris Johnston on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Andersen, who was originally selected by the Hurricanes with the 187th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft, was unable to come to terms with Carolina on a contract and later re-entered the draft, selected by the Anaheim Ducks in 2012.
He would go on to play several years with the Ducks before joining the Toronto Maple Leafs ahead of the 2016-17 season. He then joined the Hurricanes ahead of 2021-22, and has signed a series of extensions to remain with the club.
He has a career NHL record of 324-149-58 with a 2.58 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage with 28 shutouts. He will now also soon have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup for the first time.
