5-star DT David Folorunsho picks Notre Dame Fighting Irish over Miami, Georgia

Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish got a huge pickup in the defensive trenches, earning the commitment of defensive tackle David Folorunsho.

Folorunsho announced his commitment to the Fighting Irish on Friday, per On3 insider Hayes Fawcett. He picked them over the likes of the Miami Hurricanes, Georgia Bulldogs, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

“Love thee Notre Dame☘ #GoIrish,” Folorunsho said to Fawcett.

Folorunsho stands out as a five-star prospect on Rivals while having a four-star ranking with a 92 score on 247Sports. In the latter, he is fourth among players in the state of Illinois, seventh among players at his position, and 79th in the entire class of 2027. His composite score of 0.9814 puts him at second, third and 43rd in those categories.

“Explosive interior defender with the get-off, quickness and hands to be a difference-maker up front. Owns a squatty and compact build, but has a longer wingspan and could eventually play at 300 pounds. Fires hips through contact. Slips blocks with a brawler mentality. Agile enough to quickly plant and redirect. Empties the tank while in chase mode,” 247Sports’ Scouting Director Andrew Ivins wrote.

“Got looks up and down the line as a junior while also doubling as a blocking back on offense and should offer the same alignment possibilities in college as he can shade up or over a guard. Will need to keep improving his play-strength and mastering his craft, but projects as a potential impact player for a College Football Playoff hopeful with his range and energy.”

What’s next for Notre Dame amid David Folorunsho addition

It’s a remarkable addition to the defense for Marcus Freeman to provide to Notre Dame when David Folorunsho arrives in 2027.

Folorunsho was active throughout his junior year, standing out as a two-way player with snaps all across the DL in addition to H-back. He recorded up to 55 tackles (18 TFL) and five sacks on defense in 11 games.

Notre Dame seeks a return to the College Football Playoff after missing out on the tournament last season. They finished with a 10-2 record, declining an invitation to the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
