WR Mecole Hardman Jr

Hardman entered Buffalo with the reputation of a game-breaking speed threat. He could stretch defenses vertically while contributing as both a return specialist and offensive weapon. Those qualities remain appealing. However, the Bills’ receiving corps looks dramatically different entering 2026.

The arrival of Moore reshaped the hierarchy. Khalil Shakir continues to play an important role. Joshua Palmer provides another dependable veteran option. Keon Coleman remains a key piece. Behind them, Dante Pettis and several younger receivers continue battling for valuable depth and return responsibilities.

Buffalo already boasts one of the AFC’s deepest backfields. James Cook III remains the featured runner. Ray Davis and Ty Johnson provide complementary skill sets. That leaves little room for another traditional running back like Gore. The competition becomes even tighter when considering the team’s fullback options. For Gore, production alone may not be enough. Strong rushing performances during the preseason certainly matter. That said, versatility often becomes the deciding factor. Pass protection will be especially important. Protecting Josh Allen remains a non-negotiable responsibility for every running back. Gore must also embrace every opportunity on special teams. That can prove he can contribute regardless of whether he receives offensive touches. If he becomes indispensable across multiple phases of the game, Buffalo may find it difficult to let him go.

LB Javon Solomon

Javon Solomon’s natural explosiveness as an edge rusher has never been in question. Solomon consistently demonstrates great burst. That makes him an intriguing developmental pass-rushing option.

Jim Leonhard’s defense, however, demands much more than pass-rushing ability. Outside linebackers in a base 3-4 system must be complete defenders. They are expected to rush the passer and occasionally drop into coverage as part of disguised pressure packages.

With Bradley Chubb and Greg Rousseau firmly established atop the rotation and veteran Mike Danna also competing for meaningful snaps, Solomon cannot survive as a one-dimensional specialist. The preseason gives him an invaluable opportunity. Generating quarterback pressure will certainly help his case. Coaches will also pay equally close attention to his discipline against the run and his comfort operating within Leonhard’s defensive concepts.

If Solomon demonstrates meaningful growth across all three areas, Buffalo gains another valuable rotational defender. If not, his roster spot could disappear quickly.

Preseason snaps

The Bills have assembled one of the NFL’s deepest and most balanced rosters. That depth is both a strength and a challenge. It creates fierce competition and guarantees that talented contributors will ultimately be left off the final 53-man roster.

Mecole Hardman Jr must prove he remains a valuable all-around offensive and special teams weapon. Frank Gore needs to show that his versatility extends well beyond carrying the football. Javon Solomon must convince Jim Leonhard that he can thrive within a more demanding defensive system.

For all three players, the margin for error is remarkably small. Preseason statistics alone won’t determine their futures. Consistency, versatility, attention to detail, and the ability to seize limited opportunities will carry far greater importance.
