Zohran Mamdani reacts to Knicks’ James Dolan giving away 500 NBA Finals tickets
The New York Knicks are hosting an NBA Finals game for the first time in nearly 30 years on Monday, at Madison Square Garden. Knicks owner James Dolan is giving away 500 NBA Finals tickets to underprivileged families, ahead of Game 3. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani applauded the decision.
“I’m appreciative of the fact that Mr. Dolan has provided a number of hundreds of tickets for these finals for those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it,” Mamdani said, per The Athletic. “I think this is a moment where everyone is thinking about the Knicks … (While campaigning), I remember speaking about the fact that we’re going to fight for affordable tickets and there are many who rolled their eyes. And now there will be a thousand New Yorkers who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to go to the game for whom this will mean everything and that’s an incredible opportunity.”
The Knicks success this season has caused a lot of excitement around New York. The team hasn’t made the NBA Finals since 1999. Following news though that the Knicks were headed to the finals, ticket prices for the games at MSG skyrocketed.
It reportedly costs thousands of dollars to get just one ticket for Game 3. Since so many New Yorkers can’t afford that, Dolan made the decision to give away those tickets.
Mamdani plans to attend on Monday. So does President Donald Trump, who announced he will be in attendance at MSG. Both Trump and Mamdani are Knicks fans, even though they are on different sides of the political spectrum.
New York plays the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 on Monday. The Knicks lead the series 2-0, and can sweep San Antonio at MSG if they win the next two contests.
