Zach Lowe warns Donovan Mitchell at Cavaliers’ playoff crossroads

Zach Lowe shared his concerns about Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ chances going into the 2026 NBA Playoffs.

Mitchell completed his eighth season in the league, his fourth with the Cavaliers. He has helped Cleveland enjoy its best success since the LeBron James era, getting them four consecutive playoff appearances and counting.

Lowe, appearing on Bill Simmons’ show, makes the case that Mitchell’s Cavaliers are nearing that point where they’re no longer really a title contender or an up-and-coming title contender but just a mid-level playoff team. He uses the Chris Paul and Blake Griffin Clippers as a great example.

“It’s a crossroads pick for me also because if they disappoint in the playoffs again, they’ve already traded one of these guys, he’s not like a flight risk anytime soon. I’m not saying that. I’m just saying there just comes a point, you’ve seen it with the Clippers, the Chris Paul, Blake Griffin Clippers where like if you just lose too many times too early in the playoffs for what your pedigree should be, it just starts to go sideways a little bit. And I think Cleveland is kind of nearing that point and Donovan Mitchell, I want to see a deeper playoff run,” Lowe said at the 57:04 mark.

Donovan Mitchell and the Cavaliers will hope to be better after losing in five games to the Indiana Pacers in the East semifinals last year.

Mitchell continues to shine as one of the best scorers in the league, producing 27.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game throughout 70 appearances. He is shooting 48.3% from the field, including 36.4% from downtown, this season.

Cleveland finished the regular season with a 52-30 record, securing the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference bracket. They are above the Toronto Raptors and the Atlanta Hawks while being under the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics.

The Cavaliers will look forward to their playoff journey, being at home to begin the first round. They take on the Raptors as Game 1 will take place on April 18 at 1 p.m. ET.
