Yoane Wissa punches DR Congo’s ticket to World Cup knockout stage vs. Uzbekistan

Yoane Wissa made incredible history for DR Congo as he came through for his country in the clutch during their group finale against Uzbekistan in Matchday 3 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday night.

The stakes were high for DR Congo going into the match. They impressed in the first two games, pulling off a stunning 1-1 draw against World Cup contenders Portugal before coming up short in a 1-0 loss to Colombia.

They only got one point out of those contests, sitting at third place in the group standings. DR Congo required a win over Uzbekistan or a draw and loss would automatically eliminate them from getting to the knockout stage.

The Uzbeks made their objective harder by scoring the first goal of the game in the first half. DR Congo had to fight back in the second half, which Wissa was more than willing to rally his team back from the deficit. He provided two goals in the match, the second sealing the victory in stoppage time.

What’s next for Yoane Wissa, DR Congo after beating Uzbekistan

Yoane Wissa came through for DR Congo in the nick of time, delivering a brace of two goals to beat Uzbekistan 3-1.

Wissa tied the game with a penalty kick in the 68th minute. Fellow teammate Fiston Mayele scored the game-winning strike 10 minutes later, while DR Congo held on thanks to Wissa’s final score in the early portion of stoppage time. This gifted the African side’s first-ever ticket to the knockout stage, making history in the process.

DR Congo ended the group stage with four points following one win, one draw and one loss. They finished at third place in Group K above Uzbekistan while trailing Portugal and Colombia.

DR Congo will look forward to their journey in the knockout stage. They prepare for their Round of 32 clash against Portugal on July 2 at 7 p.m. ET.
