Yankees’ Cody Bellinger adds to Royals’ misery with home run explosion

The Kansas City Royals (7-14) had already experienced a shockingly unbearable road trip entering Saturday, losing four straight games in rather brutal fashion (by a combined five runs). The New York Yankees (12-9) decided to sprinkle some variety in KC’s anguish, however, and proceeded to pummel pitchers Noah Cameron and Mitch Spence. Cody Bellinger was the most frequent purveyor of pain in this afternoon outing in The Bronx.

The 2019 National League MVP and 2020 World Series champion went 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs and one walk, helping the Yankees clinch the series with a 13-4 victory. He was one of three players to drive the ball over the fence in the third inning, succeeding Amed Rosario and preceding the molten-hot Ben Rice. Bellinger then hit another 370-plus-foot dinger in the sixth, stretching New York’s lead to 10-0.

Whether it be against a lefty or righty, the 30-year-old outfielder was seeing the ball perfectly in this one. Obviously, he was not the only one. The Yankees notch their highest run total of the young season and win consecutive games for the first time since April 4. Maneuvering around swells and lulls is essential in baseball, but this team must figure out how to maintain a consistently productive brand of offense.

Otherwise, New York will continue to fluctuate in the standings. Bellinger could be instrumental in providing stability in the lineup. The two-time Silver Slugger signed a five-year, $162.5 million contract in the offseason and is therefore under far more scrutiny. Following a modest stretch to begin the campaign, he is starting to find his form at the plate.

Cody Bellinger is batting .274 with three homers, 11 RBIs, a .368 on-base percentage, .452 slugging percentage and .820 OPS. He will try to punish the Royals a bit more in Sunday’s series finale.
