Yankees’ Cam Schlittler joins Paul Skenes on exclusive list that only has 1 other player

The New York Yankees have a young star in starting pitcher Cam Schlittler. Schlittler joined an exclusive Major League Baseball club on Sunday.

“The only pitchers in MLB history to strike out 160+ batters and have an ERA below 2.40 in their first 28 MLB games: Jose Fernandez, Paul Skenes, Cam Schlittler,” Codify posted to X, formerly Twitter.

Schlittler worked for the Yankees on Sunday in a game against the Boston Red Sox. He allowed four hits and one earned run over five-plus innings of work.

“Schlittler’s fastball was clocked as high as 99.5 mph in the outing, averaging 97.5 mph — just 0.2 mph off his season average of 97.7. His cutter (94.3 mph), sinker (98 mph) and curveball (86.1 mph) all inched up over his season averages,” MLB.com reported following his outing.

The young hurler has quickly become a sparkling gem in the Yankees rotation. New York has been banged up in the rotation for a good while. Max Fried, Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole have all battled injuries the last few years.

The Yankees are hoping to once again reach the postseason. New York is dealing with a troubling injury to star Aaron Judge, who is out for several weeks. Yankees fans hope Schlittler is able to keep up his strong production in Judge’s absence.

New York has been able to score runs this year, but has not been able to win a lot of big games. The Bronx Bombers have just a .286 winning percentage against teams with winning records.

“At plus-93, the Yankees have by far the best run differential in the American League. So why haven’t they been able to run away from the pack? The answer lies here, in their lowly winning percentage against teams with .500 or better records. That ties the Twins for the lowest such winning percentage in the AL,” MLB.com reported.

New York is second in the American League East heading into Sunday. The Yankees are 37-26 on the year.
