Yankees’ Cam Schlittler gets brutally honest after career-best strikeout performance vs. Reds
The New York Yankees continued their strong stretch Saturday, but Cam Schlittler commanded the spotlight after a career-best performance against the Cincinnati Reds. The right-hander’s latest start gave New York another reminder of how much its rotation has helped drive the club through a demanding stretch.
Schlittler delivered the best regular-season outing of his major league career Friday night at Yankee Stadium. The 25-year-old threw six scoreless innings, allowed four hits, issued no walks, and struck out a career-high 13 batters in a 5-0 win over Cincinnati.
The outing strengthened Schlittler’s breakout 2026 season in the Bronx. The right-handed flamethrower lowered his ERA to an AL best 1.71 through 16 total starts, ranking second across all MLB. His fastball mix averaged 97.9 mph and overwhelmed the Reds hitters throughout the night.
The performance also carried historic significance. Schlittler became the youngest Yankees pitcher since Al Downing in 1964 to record 13 strikeouts in a game. He also became the youngest pitcher in franchise history to reach that mark without issuing a walk, further cementing one of the most electric outings by a young Yankees starting pitcher in recent memory.
After the win, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch shared the Massachusetts native’s measured response, even as attention surrounding his breakout season continues to grow.
“It’s early. I’ve got a lot to work on,” Schlittler said. “We’ve got some really good pitchers in this clubhouse. The most I can do is go out there, stay healthy and consistent, and try to win this team some games.”
That answer showed why the Yankees trust him. Schlittler did not lean into personal hype, even as the AL Cy Young conversation grows louder around his breakout season.
His mindset matters with Aaron Judge sidelined by a fractured right rib. New York has gone 10-5 since Judge landed on the injured list, and Schlittler has helped keep the club on track.
For the 6-foot-8 rising star, Friday’s start felt less like a peak than another step forward. The strikeouts commanded attention, but his poise and perspective made the performance even more impressive.
