Yankees’ Austin Wells lands on injured list before Red Sox matchup
Injuries have hit the Yankees hard this season. Just a few days after learning that captain Aaron Judge would be out for 4 to 6 weeks with a fractured rib on his right side, Austin Wells has been placed on the Injured List with cervical headaches.
Wells has been the Yankees’ primary catcher to this point in the season, as he has started 47 games. The team is promoting catcher J.C. Escarra from the team’s affiliate at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees have designated Wells to stay on the Injured List for 10 games, but they will have the option of lengthening his stay if he is not deemed healthy and ready to resume his season.
Manager Aaron Boone had not mentioned any health issues involving Wells, so the move to the IL was somewhat surprising. Cervical headaches can result from a cervical injury or a condition such as arthritis.
The move was made prior to the scheduled Saturday night game between the Boston Red Sox and the Yankees. That game was delayed by rain before officials made the weather-related decision to postpone it. The two teams are scheduled to resume their series Sunday.
Wells has struggled badly this year at the plate. He is hitting just .166 this season with 4 home runs and 7 runs batted in. He has struck out 45 times in 145 at bats. His performance is a big drop-off from last year when he hit 21 home runs and drove in 71 runs.
The Yankees have dropped four of their last six games after a previous hot streak. The team will have to adjust to playing without Judge until mid-July. New York is in second place in the American League East, 1.0 game behind the Tampa Bay Rays.
