Yankees’ Anthony Volpe in Tuesday’s lineup despite Aaron Boone saying he wouldn’t be
When the New York Yankees face the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday, Anthony Volpe will be batting ninth and playing shortstop. However, that didn’t always appear to be the case.
Manager Aaron Boone appeared on Talkin’ Yanks earlier in the day. There, he stated that Volpe would be riding the bench on Tuesday.

Ultimately, that didn’t end up being the case. Perhaps Boone mixed up his words or had a later change of heart. Whatever the case may be, Volpe found his way into Tuesday’s starting lineup.
He is entering the matchup hitting .269 with a home run, 13 RBIs and six stolen bases through his first 29 games in 2026. It has been a tumultuous road for the shortstop. He began the year on the injured list due to shoulder surgery. Then when he recovered, the Yankees optioned him to Triple-A.
Jose Caballero has taken over the starting shortstop role, leaving Volpe’s long-term future a bit murky. But at least on Tuesday, he’ll have an opportunity to prove he deserves a longer leash.
His tenure in New York has come with plenty of flashes of brilliance, including a Gold Glove as a rookie. But overall, Volpe is hitting .225 with 53 home runs, 205 RBIs and 76 stolen bases. The counting stats may look nice, his stolen bases are impressive overall. But Volpe also had 150+ strikeouts during his first three years in the league. His stranglehold over the shortstop position isn’t as strong as it once was.
The Yankees will eventually need to make a decision on what to do with Volpe. But on Tuesday, they’re just looking to get a win. Entering the game on a three-game losing streak, the shortstop will now look to change New York’s fortune. He’ll also try to remind Boone why he’s in the lineup.
