Yankees’ Aaron Boone gives Jazz Chisholm props: ‘Lollipop kid came through’
Based on what transpired inside Comerica Park on Tuesday night, there is an important question worth pondering. Did Jazz Chisholm Jr. deliberately initiate lollipop gate to incite the crowd and fire himself up? He seemed extra motivated in the face of incessant heckling during the New York Yankees’ latest showdown with the Detroit Tigers.
The two-time All-Star, who entered the game with a modest .226/.312/.404/.716 slash line, irritated his critics and propelled his team to a 4-3 victory. Chisholm went 2-for-4 at the plate and hit a go-ahead two-run homer off right-handed pitcher Casey Mize in the sixth inning. One night after questionably sticking a lollipop in his mouth at second base, the scrutinized left-handed batter was berated with taunts from Tigers fans.
The jeers only fueled him, and he celebrated his clutch blast by holding up a Dubble Bubble jar to the camera. Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who initially expressed frustration with Chisholm’s antics, could only praise the Silver Slugger after his impressive showing in Detroit.
“The lollipop kid came through tonight in a big way,” Boone told YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits after New York snapped its three-game losing streak. “He can have all the lollipops he wants now… Some people right around the on-deck circle were ‘sucker’ this, ‘lollipop’ that, so I know he got a lot of satisfaction out of hitting that home run… As long as he doesn’t take it out to second base with him, we’re good.”

Jazz Chisholm Jr. now has 12 dingers this season. The 28-year-old is unlikely to reach the 30-mark in 2026, but if he can produce in big spots like he did against the Tigers, then Aaron Boone and Yankees fans will tolerate his shenanigans. Heck, the clubhouse is even embracing the lollipop saga.
Chisholm will try to get off this see-saw and attain a consistently excellent form in what is the final year of his contract. New York (47-31) squares off with two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal in Wednesday’s series finale, starting at approximately 6:40 p.m. ET.
