Wrexham and Southampton are targeting promotion to the Premier League as the end of the Championship season grows ever closer, but both teams still have work to do as they seek a play-off place.

Will Wrexham prove too strong for Southampton on home turf, or will the Saints go marching on after their glorious weekend in the FA Cup?

Wrexham vs Southampton predictions

This could end up being one of Southampton’s most memorable seasons in years – and it is safe to say no one saw that coming just a few short months ago.

When the Saints drew 1-1 with Portsmouth in the south coast derby in late January, they were 15th in the Championship table.

Tonda Eckert had pulled them clear of trouble since taking charge in early November, but it looked like mid-table mediocrity beckoned for the Saints.

No longer. Southampton have charged up the Championship standings over the last couple of months, and they head into this clash on Tuesday night with genuine hopes of promotion.

Eckert’s men have taken 30 points from the last 36 available. Since the beginning of February, only champions-elect Coventry City have accumulated more points than Southampton.

Not only that, but the Saints also booked their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup by stunning Premier League leaders Arsenal on Saturday.

It was a wonderful night at St Mary’s, as Southampton advanced to the last four of the competition against the odds.

The FA Cup could ultimately prove to be a distraction from the club’s primary goal of securing an immediate return to the top flight following relegation last time out.

Yet the victory over Arsenal will have further increased confidence in the camp ahead of this crunch clash with Wrexham.

The table will look different by the time Tuesday’s match kicks off, with the Championship’s other 22 teams all in action on Easter Monday.

At the time of writing, Wrexham are sixth on 64 points and Southampton are seventh on 63. The Saints have a game in hand on most of the teams around them, including fifth-placed Hull City and Derby County in eighth.

Phil Parkinson’s charges have had an inconsistent few weeks. Their last five Championship outings have produced two wins, two defeats and a draw.

Wrexham shared the points with West Bromwich Albion on Good Friday, coming from 2-0 down to avoid defeat at The Hawthorns.

This is an opportunity for Wrexham and Southampton to not only boost their own promotion chances, but to damage those of a direct rival for a top-six finish.

It is, in short, a massive match for both teams. We should be in store for an absorbing encounter at the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday.

Wrexham vs Southampton betting tips

Will Wrexham or Southampton take a step towards the Championship play-offs on Tuesday?

More joy for Saints

Southampton have the bit between their teeth right now and that could ultimately decide Tuesday’s six-pointer.

Wrexham have lost at home to two fellow play-off contenders in Millwall and Hull City in recent times, and Southampton are capable of following suit.

Eckert’s team have been one of the top two teams in the Championship over the last two months, and they will be on a high after their triumph over Arsenal.

Of course, that does not mean this will be a one-sided affair. But on balance, Southampton are good value to pick up maximum points.

Even first half

Of Southampton’s last 13 wins in all competitions, nine have been by a single-goal margin.

Eckert’s team have not necessarily been blowing opponents away, but they have consistently been able to edge their way to victory.

The score has been tied at half-time in no fewer than 18 of Southampton’s 39 Championship games this term, so there is a good chance there will be nothing separating these two teams at the break.

Consider, too, that Wrexham have been behind after 45 minutes in just one of their last seven matches in the league.

When the half-time whistle sounds on Tuesday, we expect the scoreboard to show parity between Wrexham and Southampton.

Azaz to threaten

Southampton are in the mix for promotion to the Premier League despite not having a player in double figures for goals.

Finn Azaz is their chief goal-getter with nine strikes to his name, so the Republic of Ireland international will be one of Southampton’s primary threats on Tuesday.

Azaz has only struck once in his last nine appearances for club and country, but he has a knack for getting into dangerous positions.

Wrexham have the leakiest backline of the teams in the promotion conversation, so Azaz will rate his chances of making an impact on this match.
