Woj, St Bonaventure land ex-4-star transfer from Boston College

The St Bonaventure Bonnies and general manager Adrian Wojnarowski landed a commitment from an intriguing player out of the transfer portal in Akbar Waheed III, as per Pete Thamel of ESPN. Waheed was originally committed to Boston College but ended up redshirting this past season. He joins the Bonnies with a full four years of college basketball eligibility intact.

Waheed is the first commitment out of the transfer portal for St Bonaventure thus far. As of now, the Bonnies have lost three players to the portal in shooting guard Cayden Charles, guard Amar’e Marshall and power forward Frank Mitchell.

Waheed was a former four-star recruit in high school while at Georgetown Prep. His commitment comes on the heels of the Bonnies picking up a star Division 2 duo in Zach Philipkowski and Ben Bill, as per Jonathan Givony of Draft Express. Both players are reunited with new St Bonaventure head coach Mike MacDonald who was previously head coach at Daeman University.

St Bonaventure finished this past season with an overall record of 17-17 and 4-14 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Bonnies failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. Before the end of the regular season, longtime head coach Mike Schmidt, who had been at the helm for 19 years, announced that he would retire at the season’s end.

Wojnarowski landed on MacDonald as the Bonnies new head coach. Prior to now, MacDonald’s only experience as a Division 1 head coach was at Canisius 1997-2006. The majority of his head coaching experience has come at the D2 level with Daeman and the Division 3 level with Medaille College.
