WNBA star Sophie Cunningham gets new role with a twist as free agency decision looms

While fans await a free agency decision from WNBA star Sophie Cunningham, the 2025 Indiana Fever star is continuing her broadcasting career with her latest move.

Cunningham announced on Tuesday, Apr. 7, 2026, that she was joining USA Sports as a contributor throughout the 2026 WNBA season.

“I’m back baby and with a NEW SQUAAAAD!!” Cunningham wrote. “I’m joining the [USA Sports] team throughout the year to contribute to studio coverage of [WNBA] games on [USA Network; basketball, oncoming fist, and fire emojis.]”

Scott Agness of the Fieldhouse Files confirmed the news, but noted that Cunningham will only “contribute as her playing schedule allows.” So, this is not a permanent move to the desk.

Agness compared it to Draymond Green’s work with TNT and Caitlin Clark’s with NBC since they are both current players who are also broadcasters.

Long before her playing career with the Fever, Cunningham contributed on-air work for the Phoenix Suns broadcasts in 2022. Of course, she spent the first six years of her career in Phoenix, playing for the Mercury.

She is also one of the hosts of Show Me Something. Cunningham co-hosts the podcast alongside West Wilson, and it has garnered a large following.

The WNBA free agency negotiation period began on Wednesday, Apr. 8. So, as an unrestricted free agent for the first time, Cunningham will make her decision about her next playing destination sooner rather than later.

Cunningham spent the 2025 season with the Fever. She was traded to Indiana as part of a four-team trade. The Dallas Wings and Connecticut Sun were also partners in the trade.

Her season was abruptly ended against the Sun on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025. She went down with a leg injury during the second quarter of the game. It was later revealed to be a torn MCL.
