Wings’ Paige Bueckers shrugs off injury scare in dominant game vs. Mercury

Paige Bueckers delivered her best game of the season so far on Thursday to power the Dallas Wings to a convincing victory over the Phoenix Mercury, 85-70, at College Park Center.

The Wings notched their fifth win in six games and improved to 8-4. The Mercury, on the other hand, have suffered back-to-back defeats and dropped to 4-10.

Bueckers was all sorts of phenomenal, finishing with a season-high 31 points on 14-of-20 shooting, including 3-of-5 from long distance. She also had six rebounds and five assists.

Fans held their breath in the second quarter when Bueckers hurt her ankle as she was going for the rebound. She limped to the locker room to get treatment. Fortunately, it was not serious, allowing her to return to the contest.

“I’m feeling great. I just had to go get some ankle tape. I think it touched earth, but it rolls and it rolls right back, so we’re all good,” said Clark with a smile in the postgame interview.

Dallas bounced back after getting crushed by the Minnesota Lynx, 100-76, on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Bueckers, the reigning Rookie of the Year, touted their resolve, noting that multiple players stepped up against the Mercury.

“A huge part of this league is all about response. Nights like the other night happened. You can’t let it be a habit. You can’t let it be something that you get accustomed to. We just tried to respond to that. We had a game in less than 48 hours, so it was about resting, recovering, getting our minds right, our minds sharpened. That was our response tonight,” added Bueckers.

Jessica Shepard added 17 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists, while Azzi Fudd chipped in 17 points, three rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

The Wings will battle the Portland Fire on Saturday.
