Will Smith drops hilarious admission about Dodgers’ 18-inning Game 3 vs. Blue Jays

When it comes to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series win over the Toronto Blue Jays, few players deserve as much credit as catcher Will Smith.

From his unwavering resolve calling pitchers for the Dodgers’ aces, to his go-ahead Game 7 home run, no feat was as impressive as Smith’s 18-inning performances in Game 3 at Dodger Stadium, where he held things down behind the plate for almost seven hours.

Discussing what it was like to play more innings than any other catcher in MLB history during the World Series on Hot Stove, Smith broke down his experience and why he had to take off all of November to recover from another long playoff campaign.

“No, yeah, we got good athletic trainers, good strength coaches. Yeah, like you said, the World Series kind of wiped me out, you know, especially that 18-inning game,” Smith said. “But yeah, no, you take, I just take November off. Basically, I don’t do anything in November and then come December, start working out in January, you know, we’re back at it. So it’s kind of just a routine now. It’s worked. And yeah, I don’t know. Just kind of keep going.”

Asked specifically how a player could survive an 18-inning game spent largely in a crouched position behind home base, Smith noted that he was in survival mode, having to take IVs to recover after securing the win.

“No, that was, I wasn’t really thinking after that game, honestly. I was getting IVs, just surviving, just in survival mode, you know, come back the next day, try to win,” Smith noted. “I think we dropped the next two games. Unfortunately, it would be nice to win those two, but had to travel back to Toronto. But yeah, I’m just glad we ended up winning it. So it was worth it.”

Considering Smith effectively called two baseball games right in a row, albeit one that was very boring until the offense found a second wind deep into the night, it makes sense that he was in “survival mode” after the win. While he’d certainly like to return to the Fall Classic this October in the pursuit of the elusive three-peat, for Smith’s sake, hopefully the Dodgers can get things done in regulation instead of forcing their catcher deep into extras for the dub.
