Will Red Sox hire Alex Cora’s permanent replacement this season?

As the Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora and other coaches amidst a disappointing start to the season, the team’s thought now is finding a permanent replacement. While the Red Sox’s interim manager is Chad Tracy, executives within the team spoke about the decision to fire Cora and whether a permanent replacement will be found this season.

Boston’s chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, didn’t give an official answer on the question on Sunday, but “wouldn’t rule out” the option to find a manager this season, as he also didn’t put a timeline on Tracy’s interim tenure.

“Craig Breslow won’t put a timeline on Chad Tracy’s interim tag and wouldn’t rule out hiring a permanent manager in-season,” Chris Cotillo wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

President of the Red Sox Sam Kennedy also spoke Sunday, saying how the decision to let go of Cora was “painful but necessary,” with the decision being made on Saturday morning.

“Sam Kennedy says yesterday was ‘painful but necessary’ as they pursue a fresh start for 2026. ‘Ultimately, what matters is the performance on the field. A new beginning starts today.’ Kennedy said decision made Sat morning,” Cotillo wrote on X.

Breslow would also say how “we felt these changes were warranted,” via Bob Nightengale, when it comes to the fate of Cora and other coaches who were fired from the team. One person who wasn’t doing the press conference was principal owner John Henry, though he released a statement on Cora’s firing, thanking him for the years of managing Boston, calling the decision a “difficult” one.

“He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways. These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived,” Henry wrote.

At any rate, Cora was fired after the Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 17-1 on Saturday, though the team is off to a 10-17 record.
