Wild’s Quinn Hughes makes franchise history with game-tying goal vs Avalanche

Minnesota Wild star defenseman Quinn Hughes is the gift that keeps on giving for the team in the 2026 NHL playoffs.

In fact, Hughes made franchise history during Game 1 of the Wild’s second-round series against the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena in Denver. With an assist in the first period and a goal in the second frame, Hughes became just the first blueliner in the history of the Wild franchise to record at least 10 points in a postseason.

The historic point came on his goal in the second period that tied the score at 4-4.

Hughes is clearly on a roll in the playoffs, and he had considerable momentum heading into this series against the Avalanche. In the Wild’s series-clinching Game 6 versus the Dallas Stars, Hughes finished with three points on the strength of two goals and an assist. He finished the first round with two goals and six assists.

The Wild traded for Hughes in December, sending a 2026 first-rounder, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and Marco Rossi to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for the Norris Trophy-winning defenseman. In the 48 games he played in the regular season wearing Minnesota colors, Hughes found the back of the net five times and racked up 46 assists for a total of 51 points. Before that, he had two goals and 20 assists for 22 points in 26 games for the Canucks in the 2025-26 regular season.

Hughes will have to sustain that kind of form — if not be even better — if the Wild are to overcome the challenge of the talented Avalanche.
