Why Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. still won’t wear cup after brutal crotch shot vs. White Sox

New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. was forced to leave Thursday’s 5-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox early after taking a brutal crotch shot from a tipped foul ball during his at-bat. Apparently, the seven-year veteran has never worn a cup throughout his entire baseball career, and refuses to change even after the freak accident.

While Chisholm admitted the pain level was at “a million,” the 28-year-old second baseman chalked up the crotch shot to being unlucky, according to Gary Phillips of NYDN Sports. He will continue the trend of not wearing a cup because he trusts himself to protect that area of his body.

“Jazz Chisholm Jr. said he still won’t wear a cup despite his pain level being ‘a million’ last night,” reported Phillips. “He added cups were mandatory in the minors. But even then, he didn’t wear one because he trusts himself defensively.”

“If you ever got hit in the testicles, you would know. I’ve never worn a cup,” claimed Chisholm. “I’ve never got hit in the balls.. That was just unlucky.”

Although the shot was painful and Chisholm was forced to miss most of Thursday’s loss, the two-time All-Star will be back in action on Friday when the Yankees take on the Cincinnati Reds. He is slated to bat fifth in the lineup with Cincinnati starting right-handed pitcher Rhett Lowder.

The 2026 season was a slow start for Jazz Chisholm Jr. However, he’s been heating up recently. The Yankees star still has some catching up to do at the plate. Through 250 at-bats so far this year, Chisholm has recorded 57 hits, 10 home runs, 30 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases, giving him a .228 batting average and .316 OBP.
