Why Twins’ Byron Buxton was scratched from lineup vs. Marlins

The Minnesota Twins were forced to make a late lineup change Thursday when star center fielder Byron Buxton was scratched before a 9-1 win over the Miami Marlins because of soreness in his right hip flexor. The team announced the change around two hours before first pitch after the 32-year-old had originally been scheduled to bat leadoff as the designated hitter.

With Buxton unavailable, Austin Martin moved into the leadoff role while Josh Bell took over at designated hitter. The adjustment came during a busy stretch for Minnesota’s lineup, especially after Matt Wallner was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul earlier in the day, opening more playing time in the outfield for Martin.

Buxton has been one of MLB’s most productive hitters over the last month. After homering again Wednesday night, the veteran had recorded 15 home runs in his previous 26 games dating back to April 13, the most in the league during that span and two more than Kyle Schwarber. His latest blast also was the 23rd leadoff home run of his career and his third of the season.

Entering Thursday, Buxton was tied for second in the American League with 15 home runs and tied for third across MLB despite a slow opening stretch to the season. Over his last 23 games, the 32-year-old complied a .277 batting average, .336 on-base percentage, 1.010 OPS, 12 home runs and 19 RBIs.

Since May 14, 2025, Buxton has hit 41 home runs in 128 games. Over his last 162 games dating back to April 1, 2025, he has hit 50 homers. He is also on pace for 56 home runs this season, which would surpass his previous career-high of 35 set in 2025.

Buxton has additionally contributed defensively in center field while stealing four bases without being caught.
