Why Shaq would choose LeBron James over Kobe Bryant to start a franchise
NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal recently weighed in on one of basketball’s most debated hypothetical questions, revealing that he would choose Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James over the late Kobe Bryant if he were starting a franchise from scratch.
During a recent interview with Melissa Rohlin of The New York Post, O’Neal was asked which player, past or present, he would select with the No. 1 overall pick if he were serving as a general manager.
O’Neal initially provided a predictable answer.
“Me,” O’Neal told The Post.
When asked to exclude himself from consideration, the four-time NBA champion gave a more revealing response and pointed directly to James.
“I’d probably go with [LeBron James] because Bron — and I know this is a Kobe comparison — Bron had it when he came in,” O’Neal told The Post.
“It took Kobe two or three years to get it. Bron had it when he came in, so I’d probably go with Bron.”
The comments are particularly noteworthy given O’Neal’s history with Bryant. The two Hall of Famers formed one of the most dominant duos in NBA history during their time with the Lakers, winning three consecutive championships from 2000 through 2002.
Shaq points to LeBron James’ immediate impact over Kobe Bryant’s development curve

Bryant entered the NBA directly from high school in 1996 and gradually developed into a superstar. Although his talent was evident immediately, he came off the bench during much of his rookie season before emerging as one of the league’s elite players.
James, meanwhile, arrived in the NBA in 2003 carrying unprecedented expectations as a high school prospect. The Cleveland Cavaliers selected him with the No. 1 overall pick, and he immediately justified the hype by averaging 20.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists as a rookie en route to Rookie of the Year honors.
Over the following two decades, James developed into one of the most accomplished players in league history. The four-time NBA champion recently completed his 23rd NBA season with the Lakers and continues to perform at an All-Star level despite being 41 years old.
O’Neal’s explanation focused less on career accomplishments and more on immediate readiness. In his view, James entered the league as a franchise cornerstone from day one, while Bryant needed time to develop into the player who eventually became a five-time champion and one of the greatest scorers in NBA history.
The debate between James and Bryant remains one of the most passionate among basketball fans. O’Neal, however, made his preference clear when evaluating which player he would trust to build a franchise around from the very beginning.
For the Hall of Fame center, James’ ability to impact winning immediately upon entering the NBA ultimately gives him the edge.
