Why Pistons’ HC JB Bickerstaff wasn’t surprised by Cade Cunningham’s 45-point Game 5 heater
Detroit Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham delivered a season-saving performance Wednesday, scoring 45 points in a 116–109 win vs. the Orlando Magic to keep the Pistons’ playoff run alive.
The victory cut the Magic’s series lead to 3–2 and forced a Game 6, giving the Pistons renewed belief after facing elimination. Cunningham carried the offense with poise, efficiency, and control, setting the tone for Detroit in its most important game of the season.
Cunningham shot 13-of-23 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, and converted all 14 of his free throw attempts. His 45-point performance set a Pistons franchise playoff scoring record, adding historic weight to a night already defined by urgency.
Detroit Free Press reporter Omari Sankofa II shared head coach J.B. Bickerstaff’s nonchalant reaction on X, formerly Twitter, after Cunningham’s dominant showing under pressure.
“It’s him, right? Tha’s the way he is. He’s not a guy who runs around talking a lot. He understands what the moment is, he understands what’s in front of us and he wanted to go out and be great.”

Bickerstaff framed the performance as a reflection of Cunningham’s character rather than a surprise. The coach pointed to Cunningham’s leadership, preparation, and awareness of the stakes as reasons Detroit trusted him in the biggest moments.
The 24-year-old superstar also came through late, hitting a step-back dagger in the final minute to help seal the win. The shot capped his record-setting night and ensured Detroit avoided elimination.
The Pistons still trail the Magic in the series, but Wednesday’s win changed the tone entering Game 6. With Cunningham playing at this level, the Pistons have reason to believe they can extend the series and make a push toward a comeback.
