Why Giants’ Tony Vitello didn’t recruit Max Scherzer in free agency

Did Tony Vitello and the San Francisco Giants attempt to sign Max Scherzer in MLB free agency this past offseason? The two have known each other for over 20 years, so a reunion in San Francisco seemingly made sense from the outside looking in. Scherzer recently signed with the Toronto Blue Jays, however. Vitello was asked during an appearance on Foul Territory if he tried to recruit Scherzer to San Francisco.

“We never really crossed that line,” Vitello said. “I don’t know if it’s mutual respect… I would always joke with everyone, they’d ask, I’m like, ‘It’s not like I’m inviting this guy to a Halloween party, or a social event.’ It’s gotta be a match, and there’s contracts and things involved. I just know there was a really good go back and forth between he and the Blue Jays, an immense appreciation for one another.

“It’s not my business to say his deal, but he’s pretty east coast flavored right now. Both sets of grandparents are there. They got four kids. It’s a great match, so I’m happy for him.”

Scherzer is still a capable starting pitcher at 41 years old. He could have brought his veteran experience to the Giants’ rotation. In the end, the three-time Cy Young winning hurler agreed to return to the Giants.

So, will there be some smack talk between Scherzer and Vitello?

“The group chat smack talk has already started,” Vitello admitted. “But it’s all very light-hearted.”

Vitello and Scherzer are looking to lead their teams to successful seasons in 2026.
