Why Giants’ 1-0 win over Brewers is like no other since 1991
The San Francisco Giants scraped past the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Wednesday night, leaning on Logan Webb’s lights-out outing and a milestone home run from rookie Victor Bericoto.
Webb logged one of the best starts of his career, carrying a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. He retired the first 15 batters he faced before issuing a leadoff walk to Sal Frelick in the sixth inning. Milwaukee’s only hit came in the seventh when Brice Turang lined a one-out single to left field, just beyond a diving attempt by third baseman Matt Chapman. Webb completed seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four and throwing 95 pitches. He also generated 12 ground-ball outs and recorded 22 called strikes during the outing.
San Francisco provided just enough offense in the fifth inning. Bericoto, playing in the majors for only 13 days, hit his first career home run on a 2-0 pitch from Brewers starter Robert Gasser. The 385-foot opposite-field shot to right-center field landed in the Giants’ bullpen before bouncing into the stands. The solo homer held up as the only run of the game.
It marked only the third time in franchise history that San Francisco has won a 1-0 game with a player’s first career home run. The previous instances were on Aug. 7, 1991, when Darren Lewis hit a leadoff homer, and on June 10, 1954, when Bill Taylor also homered in a 1-0 win against Milwaukee’s franchise when it was the Braves.
The Giants bullpen secured the finish. Erik Miller worked the eighth inning before Keaton Winn entered and induced a double play from Gary Sanchez. In the ninth, Winn allowed a leadoff double to Christian Yelich, who advanced to third on a groundout, but Winn struck out Turang and induced a game-ending grounder from William Contreras to record his second career save and first since 2023.
San Francisco moved to 24-38 with the victory, picking up just its second win in nine games while bringing the Brewers’ three-game winning streak to an end.
