Why Caitlin Clark is especially excited for this WNBA season

Fans of the Indiana Fever were especially hyped up for the 2026 WNBA season as it marked the return to the court for Caitlin Clark following a groin injury that prematurely ended her 2025 season. And the Fever star was equally excited for this season, if not more, but not just because she would be returning to the court.

Caitlin Clark was anticipating the new WNBA season because of the incoming foul crackdown from the officials, something the Fever star spoke about during a recent appearance on ‘Post Moves,’ alongside Candace Parker and Fever teammate Aaliyah Boston.

“I’m excited that freedom of movement is a point of emphasis,” Clark said. “And not that it needs to be excessive. I understand that’s part of the game. But I do think it kind of began to start to cross a certain line, so excited about that. I know that was really important for the coaches over the offseason. They wanted it cleaned up. And I think more than anything, it’s gonna make the product of the game a lot better too.”

But in practice, the new emphasis on freedom of movement has had mixed results. Take the Los Angeles Sparks’ recent game against the Toronto Tempo where a total of 59 fouls were called with a combined 72 free-throws attempted.

It slogs down the game and makes for an unwatchable product when there is a stoppage almost every minute. While there was a desire from teams to clean some things up a bit in terms of the overall physicality, it appears as if WNBA officials are doing too much overcorrecting leading to making the product worse instead of better like Clark suggested.
