Why Aaron Boone continues to trust Anthony Volpe despite Yankees fans’ frustration

On Monday, the New York Yankees kicked off their road series against the Cleveland Guardians with a thrilling 7-5 win. The Yankees are attempting to hold down the fort in the absence of Aaron Judge for the foreseeable future due to a ribcage injury, and both Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger stepped up with big plays on Monday.

One player who hasn’t been performing up to par this season is Anthony Volpe, who once again came up empty at the plate against the Guardians.

However, recently, Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed why he is still continuing to trust Volpe despite the star’s struggles and the growing frustration of fans.

“I see talent. I see a tough kid that works his butt off, that’s not afraid of that noise. He hasn’t found his way to the level he expects yet, that we expect him to get to, but he’s also still a very young player that has had a lot of real success. People have wanted it to go faster or quicker, or for him to be at a higher level, but baseball is not always like that,” said Boone, per New York Post Sports on X, formerly Twitter.

Indeed, Volpe is still just 25 years old, and considering the amount of distance the Yankees have built between themselves and the playoff line, it makes sense that Boone would be more willing to give him a longer leash to make mistakes and try to work his way out of his slump.

However, with Judge set to miss several weeks due to the injury, hitting could be at a premium for New York, so it will be fascinating to see how Volpe and the other players respond to the challenge.
