What Zack Wheeler said about helping Phillies snap 10-game losing streak

As the Philadelphia Phillies snapped their 10-game losing streak in the 8-5 win over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, it was also a significant night for pitcher Zack Wheeler. With the Phillies’ star pitcher returning after finding a blood clot in his shoulder, as he had not pitched since last August, he would speak about his first game in eight months.

Wheeler would throw five innings in 84 pitches, striking out six, while allowing two runs, three hits, and three walks. The 35-year-old had two goals for Saturday, which were snapping Philadelphia’s 10-game skid and getting through his return unscathed.

“Obviously, I want to stop it,” Wheeler said of the losing streak, via ESPN. “That’s always kind of been my thing over the years, is if we are in a little slump, I want to be the stopper. And even if it’s two games in a row, I want to be that guy. So, you know, I love being in that situation and take pride in stopping it.”

“You think about this moment,” Wheeler said of the return. “Me, I just want to get it over with. Just keep moving on, just the anxiety part of it. So, yeah, I’m glad it’s done, especially when you come out of the game kind of, you know, get that weight off your shoulders.”

Phillies’ Zack Wheeler on feeling a “little tired” during return game

Wheeler would throw 56 strikes in the 84 pitches he threw and had an easy-going start until the fourth inning, where he threw 36 pitches, allowing the two runs. The star would even say he felt tired after the fourth inning in his return.

“I was a little tired (after the fourth),” Wheeler said. “I was treading water out there, so got a little second wind. The guys gave me a long inning, (time to) cool down and get my second wind. So I was able to go out there for the fifth.”

At any rate, Philadelphia looks to build off the win, especially Wheeler, whose next start is scheduled for Friday, May 1, against the Miami Marlins.
