What Michael Jordan said about Stacey King’s death

The Chicago Bulls are still coming to grips with the untimely passing of Stacey King at the age of 59 on Sunday. Since then, teammates, colleagues, and loved ones have paid tribute.

One of those was none other than Michael Jordan. On Monday, Jordan put out a tribute of his own, per ESPN Chicago.

“I’m deeply saddened to learn of Stacey’s passing. We shared some special years together as teammates, and he was part of a group that helped define an era of Chicago Bulls basketball. My thoughts are with Stacey’s family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched.”

Jordan and King played together from 1989 to 1993. King was drafted out of the University of Oklahoma, while Jordan was in his fifth year with the Bulls. At the time, the Bulls were a playoff team still in the title hunt, most often coming up short against the Detroit Pistons.

King was a catalyst of the bench, particularly during Game 6 of the 1992 NBA Finals, when Chicago trailed by 15 points in the fourth quarter. Jordan sat on the bench as King and the reserves came in and helped the Bulls mount a comeback.

King hit a big bank shot to bring Chicago within three points. Then, Jordan came back in, and Chicago won their second consecutive title. After Chicago won the third title in 1993, Jordan retired and tried his hand at baseball.

King played one more season as Chicago made it to the postseason, losing to the New York Knicks in the second round in seven games.
