What Lakers’ JJ Redick told LeBron James after LA selected Bronny in NBA Draft

The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves on the verge of sweeping the Houston Rockets after their 112-108 victory in Game 3. LeBron James not only showed that he is still more than capable of leading a winning team in the postseason, but also shared memorable minutes with his son, Bronny James.

Bronny has gone from strength to strength in recent weeks and had his most productive time in the postseason thus far in Game 3. Post-game, LeBron spoke about what head coach JJ Redick had told him, when the Lakers drafted Bronny in the 2024 NBA draft, per a post on X by Benjamin Royer.

“When we drafted Bronny, Bron and I had one conversation very early on that I was going to coach Bronny. I was not going to coach LeBron’s son. And differentiating that … that’s what he wanted,” he said.

There is little doubt that Bronny has not enjoyed the most straightforward entry into the Lakers’ rotation. He had a lengthy spell in the G League before being recalled into the first team roster, and continues to look more comfortable week by week.

Bronny received a lob from his father in the second quarter for a reverse dunk, and also scored a three after being willed on by the Rockets defence. In 42 NBA games thus far, he has averaged 2.9 points and 1.2 assists, numbers that are only going to increase in the coming time.

Bronny has enjoyed increased minutes in lieu of the Lakers missing the likes of Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic. He played a combined 32 minutes in the final two regular-season games, returning with 14 points, four assists and three rebounds from the stretch.

Redick’s patient approach undoubtedly looks to be paying off, and while the jury might be out on whether Bronny can develop into a regular NBA player, he is steadily heading in the right direction for now.
