Warriors’ Stephen Curry earns prestigious Muhammad Ali honor

On Tuesday night, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry won the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award during ESPN’s 2026 Sports Humanitarian Awards show. Curry beat out two other finalists for the award: Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin and retired NFL wide receiver Adam Thielen.

The four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP isn’t just a legend for the Warriors franchise, he has also extended his legacy from the court to the communities outside of it around the Bay Area. Curry has spent the entirety of his 17-year career to this point in Golden State, and he has given back countless times to the community that has taken him as one of its own.

Curry will forever be a legend in Oakland; he and his wife, Ayesha, founded the “Eat.Learn.Play.” foundation back in 2019 before the Warriors franchise moved out of Oracle Arena in Oakland to Chase Center in San Francisco.

This foundation aims to “support children’s well­being through access to nutritious meals, quality reading resources and opportunities to play”, and the Curry family personally covers the expenses to make sure that these children in Oakland are taken care of.

The Warriors star has committed over $20 million to supporting literacy programs in the community, and they have transformed certain places into safe spaces for children “to live a happy, healthy childhood”.

Curry is coming from a place of privilege, and he is using that privilege of his to help those who are in need. Education can be very expensive, and the Warriors star is looking to level the playing field by using the resources available to him to make academic and physical learning much more accessible to those who otherwise wouldn’t get the opportunity.

The 38-year-old star’s legacy on the court is secure, whether or not LeBron James decides to sign with the Warriors. But his work off the court just takes his legendary status over the top.
