Warriors rumors: Insider concedes it’s ‘not realistic’ to load up for Thunder, Spurs this offseason

The Golden State Warriors have already made one big decision this offseason, bringing head coach Steve Kerr back on a new two-year deal. The Warriors are hoping to wring whatever they can out of the twilight years of Stephen Curry’s career.

On Monday, the NBA world sat and watched in awe as the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder battled it out in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, looking to be in a completely different tier than every other team in the league.

With this being the case, some are wondering how smart it would be to pour heavy assets into win-now moves this summer, considering how far above the pack the Spurs and Thunder look.

Recently, Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard broke down his line of thinking as it pertains to the Warriors.

“They don’t necessarily need to try to load their roster for a seven-game series against the Thunder or Spurs. That’s not realistic. But the Warriors can try to build themselves back up — with sharper play and younger, healthier bodies — to at least get themselves to the tier just below the top teams in the Western Conference. Then who knows from there,” he wrote.

Of course, one injury can change everything. The Toronto Raptors were rewarded for their win-now move to get Kawhi Leonard in the middle of the Warriors’ own dynasty when Kevin Durant missed the majority of the 2019 NBA Finals, resulting in a championship for Toronto.

All told, as long as Curry is on the roster, it’s highly unlikely that the Warriors will embrace anything resembling a rebuild, and instead will look to try to morph themselves into something akin to a contender.
