Warriors rumors: Billy Donovan seen as fit to replace Steve Kerr
It remains unclear if Steve Kerr will return for his 13th season as the Golden State Warriors’ head coach, and if he doesn’t, Rachel Nichols believes Billy Donovan should jump at the chance to replace him.
In 12 years as the Warriors coach, Kerr helped the team win four NBA championships and reach five Finals. He also, as one of the greatest 3-point shooters of all time, further enabled Stephen Curry to shatter the NBA 3-point record and become a two-time league MVP and a Finals MVP.
But in recent years, Golden State has hit a rough patch, with the team recently failing to make the playoffs for the second time in the last three years. Meanwhile, Donovan is in need of a job, having parted ways with the Chicago Bulls after six seasons, only one of which resulted in a playoff berth.
Still, Nichols floated the former college basketball championship-winning coach as a potential successor for Kerr.
“If I’m Billy Donovan and I’ve coached in college and the NBA, and I’ve coached this person and this person, I would love to coach Steph Curry,” Nichols said on the ‘Open Floor’ podcast. “And by the way, Steve Kerr, as we sit here today, has not given up that job yet. But if that job is open, if I’m a coach, I want to go coach Michael Jordan, or LeBron James, or Steph Curry, or any of these top five all-time, top 10 all-time guys.”
Donovan, between his Thunder and Bulls stints, has coached one less year in the NBA than Kerr, but with far less success. While he led Oklahoma City to playoff appearances in each of his five seasons there, only his first season included a series win. None of his six years in Chicago did.
