Warriors’ Jimmy Butler puts out insane ask for rookie to take #10

The Golden State Warriors are looking to do some remodeling to their roster after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign in which they finished with just 37 wins, putting them in a play-in tournament position. They ended up missing the playoffs altogether, and it doesn’t seem as though things are bound to get better for them, unless they make seismic changes to the roster — with Jimmy Butler’s ACL injury putting the Dubs in such a bind.

Butler, however, is a beloved member of the Warriors locker room, and he’s certainly doing his part to welcome the team’s rookies to the NBA. One of the Dubs’ rookies, Lajae Jones, who was drafted with the 54th overall pick, wore the number 10 during his time with Florida State — Butler’s number with Golden State.

Jones tried his luck in getting Butler to change his number, but the Warriors star set an impossibly high price tag that there’s no way the FSU product could pay considering that he’s even yet to get his NBA paycheck.

“You want to buy my number? You can’t afford that. Zero shot. Just wear number like 01 and say that it’s your number backwards. For $25 million, you can have my number then,” Butler said with a cheeky smile on his face, via Warriors Talk on Instagram.

The topic of jersey numbers came up with AJ Dybantsa and Trae Young after the Washington Wizards drafted the BYU star, who wore number 3 in college, with the first overall pick. Dybantsa decided that he’d be the man to adjust, changing his number to 4 instead.

It’s common practice for rookies to be the ones to adjust, and in the Warriors’ case, there is no way that Butler is going to change his for someone who doesn’t have a guaranteed contract in the NBA yet, being a second-round pick and all. But who knows, Butler could be on the way out soon if the Warriors find a suitable trade — freeing up that number for Jones.
