Wales vs Bosnia & Herzegovina predictions and betting tips – Dragons two games from World Cup

Wales are potentially 180 minutes away from booking a place at World Cup 2026. There are, however, three other teams competing with Craig Bellamy’s boys for a qualification berth.

Bosnia & Herzegovina are one of them. Which of these sides will advance to the final by triumphing at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday night?

Wales vs Bosnia & Herzegovina predictions

Wales ended a 64-year wait for their second ever World Cup appearance in 2022, but they were unable to make it beyond the group stage.

The country’s golden generation, featuring the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen, was nearing the end four years ago, and Rob Page’s side only managed to collect one point from a possible nine in Qatar.

A rebuild began almost immediately afterwards, but it is only in the last couple of years that it has really got going.

Craig Bellamy was chosen to lead the transition in 2024. His lack of managerial experience meant the appointment was a slight gamble, but Bellamy has done a broadly excellent job so far.

On his watch, Wales won promotion to League A of the Nations League in their first campaign under their new head coach.

Then came the current World Cup qualification process. Wales were not quite able to win their group and book an automatic berth at the tournament, but finishing just two points behind Belgium in top spot represented a solid effort for a nation of 3.2 million.

And so the play-offs will determine Wales’s fate. The winner of this semi-final will host the Path A final, with either Italy or Northern Ireland set to visit Cardiff or Zenica on March 31.

Of course, Italy are huge favourites to win the second of those last-four ties, and there has been excited chatter among Wales fans about the prospect of the Azzurri heading to the Cardiff City Stadium for a make-or-break clash next week.

However, it is important that Wales do not look too far ahead. If they let their focus drift, Bosnia & Herzegovina are more than good enough to punish them.

Bosnia were also runners-up in the group stage, in their case to Austria. Like Wales, they finished only two points shy of the summit of the standings.

In their final game, Bosnia were 1-0 up against Austria with a quarter of an hour left to play, knowing that a win would send them directly to the USA, Canada and Mexico.

They could not quite hold on, however, conceding a fatal equaliser in the 77th minute. Yet the fact they got so close to an automatic place shows they should not be underestimated.

Wales vs Bosnia & Herzegovina betting tips

Wales meet Bosnia & Herzegovina in the World Cup qualification play-off semi-finals.

Wales to edge it

There is unlikely to be much between Wales and Bosnia & Herzegovina on Thursday evening. It is hard to envisage either side running away with it.

On balance, though, we favour Wales. They have been really impressive under Bellamy, who has not only got results but has also made the Dragons into a proactive, front-footed team.

Home advantage is another factor. The Cardiff City Stadium is a difficult place for visiting sides to go, and playing in front of your own fans is hugely beneficial in a one-off knockout tie.

Bosnia should not be underestimated, but if Wales are fully focused on the task in front of them, they can edge this.

Goalless first half?

The stakes could hardly be higher. One of Wales or Bosnia & Herzegovina will have their World Cup dreams shattered later this week.

While excessive conservatism can be as risky as gung-ho attacking, neither side is likely to throw caution to the wind in the first 45 minutes.

Wales will probably have more of the ball in that period, but we expect a tight and cagey opening half.

That does not mean the match will not be absorbing, but we might have to wait until the second half for our first goal.

Wilson to seize moment

Any of the 22 players on the Cardiff City Stadium pitch have the chance to make themselves a hero on Thursday night.

The man most likely to do so – in our view at least – is Harry Wilson, who is enjoying the best season of his club career.

Having primarily been used as an impact substitute last term, Wilson has nailed down a regular starting role for Fulham in 2025/26. He has repaid Marco Silva’s faith and then some, scoring 11 goals in all competitions.

Wilson also notched five goals in Wales’s qualification group. With his polished left foot and sky-high confidence, the 29-year-old can have a big say on this semi-final.
