Victor Wembanyama turnover spells doom for Spurs in Game 2

It’s a testament to the San Antonio Spurs’ fortitude that they were able to come back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to put themselves in a position to win Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks at home. But it all boiled down to late-game execution yet again, and similar to Game 1, the Spurs faltered when it mattered the most — with Victor Wembanyama being guilty of an egregious turnover at the worst possible moment.

With the game tied at 104, the Spurs held on for a defensive stop, forcing a miss from midrange against Jalen Brunson. Wembanyama corralled the board and started to bring the ball up the court. Trying to push the pace, he threw the ball towards Stephon Castle. The only problem was that Castle wasn’t looking, and Wembanyama ended up throwing the ball away off of his back.

Brunson then secured the steal and he got bumped along the sideline, getting to the free throw line as a result. He nailed the free throw that ended up sealing Game 2 for the Knicks, 105-104, putting the Spurs in a tough spot heading on the road.

This was a rough sequence for Wembanyama, and this will undoubtedly be a learning moment for the young Spurs star. On the final possession of the ballgame, Wembanyama missed a game-winning attempt from midrange, clanking it off the back iron at the buzzer. This capped a terrible last 10 seconds of the game for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, and it will be interesting to watch how he bounces back from this.

The turn of events in the final few seconds spoiled what was quite a solid effort from the Spurs star in the second half. He scored 22 of his 29 points in the second half and he helped spearhead an impressive comeback attempt, only to come up short due to some errors in the game’s dying embers.
