Victor Wembanyama makes unwanted Spurs history in Game 1 debacle vs. Timberwolves
Victor Wembanyama was the center of attraction when the San Antonio Spurs hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 of their second-round series in the playoffs at Frost Bank Center on Monday.
Although they lost, 104-102, Wembanyama displayed why he was the unanimous choice for Defensive Player of the Year, as he finished with a triple-double of 11 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 blocks.
He became only the third player in league history to notch a triple-double in points, rebounds, and blocks in the playoffs, joining Hakeem Olajuwon and Andrew Bynum.
The 22-year-old Wembanyama, who struggled on offense, also reached another milestone—but for the wrong reason, as noted in a report from ESPN’s Michael Wright.
“In addition to connecting on his lowest field goal percentage (29%) so far in the playoffs, Wembanyama missed all eight of his attempts from three-point range, which registered as the most misses from deep without a make by a player in Spurs playoff history,” wrote Wright.
Wembanyama has a decent touch from long distance. He tried to draw out Rudy Gobert and open the lane for the Spurs. Unfortunately, it did not work. Gobert did a good job of making everything difficult for his young compatriot.
Wembanyama averaged 34.9% from long distance this season. He went 7-of-13 in the first round against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Despite his awful shooting, he helped the Spurs stay afloat in Game 1 with his imposing defense, although his rim protection was questioned by Timberwolves coach Chris Finch.
Wembanyama will look to bounce back in Game 2 on Wednesday.
