Updated decision on ICE’s presence at 2026 FIFA World Cup made

A few months before the FIFA World Cup 2026 was set to begin, the Trump administration and ICE stated “security” measures ahead of the world’s most-watched sporting tournament.

In a statement, as per The Guardian, ICE director Todd Lyons opened up and addressed ICE’s new role ahead of the World Cup. “ICE, specifically Homeland Security Investigations, is a key part of the overall security apparatus for the World Cup. We are dedicated to securing that operation, and we are dedicated to the security of all of our participants as well as visitors. ICE is dedicated to ensuring everyone who visits the facilities will have a safe and secure event.”

However, Rodney Barreto, co-chair of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Miami Host Committee, has now shared an updated decision on the ICE’s presence for the 2026 World Cup. While tourists and fans attending the tournament this year feared the ICE’s presence at the USA stadiums, Barreto confirmed that the ICE will not be present at the stadiums during matches.

“ICE is not going to be at the stadium. This is not going to turn into some ’round them up’ type of thing. That’s not the purpose of this. It’ll be a great experience for everybody,” Barreto said (via The Athletic).

He shared that he had a direct conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who assured him that passport processing would be expedited and that visitors would not encounter undue delays or disruptions. “We feel very comfortable that we’re going to be in good hands,” Barreto further added.
