Tyrell Hatton sets personal Masters best with Friday 66

The Masters Tournament is underway, and Tyrell Hatton shot a 66 on Friday to shoot up the board. Despite never winning a major, Hatton has been a player at many big tournaments in the past. Most notably, he fell short of JJ Spaun’s mark at last year’s U.S. Open. But his round on Friday was unprecedented for his career at the Masters.

Hatton started his run early, making birdies at 2 and 3 to get to even par on the week. He was out long before overnight leaders Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns teed off, so his birdies at 7 and 9 put him within three shots of the lead. Birdies on 12, 15, and 16 had him all the way down to five-under par and tied for the lead. But a bogey on 18 and a McIlroy charge have him three back walking off the course.

Still, this was an excellent round for Hatton. He hit every single green in regulation, meaning he had a birdie putt on every hole. He did three-putt the 18th from the wrong spot on the green, highlighting the ways Augusta National can punish a player. According to Justin Ray of The Athletic, Hatton is the first player since Kevin Na in 2020 to hit all 18 greens.

Hatton has just one top-ten finish in nine starts at The Masters, finishing T9 in 2024. With this low round already in the bank, he could be set up for the best Augusta National finish in his career.

How far back will Hatton be of McIlroy when the day is over?
