Timberwolves rumors: Brian Windhorst hints at Anthony Edwards’ unhappiness with roster amid KAT’s playoff run

The New York Knicks are two wins away from clinching their first NBA championship since 1973 with Karl-Anthony Towns in a starring role for the team. Towns’ run to the Finals has reportedly caught the eye of his former teammate Anthony Edwards who in turn has raised questions about whether or the current Minnesota Timberwolves’ roster can achieve the same level of success in the playoffs, as per Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

During a recent segment of ESPN’s ‘First Take,’ Windhorst suggested that the Timberwolves trading away Towns was the first step in Anthony Edwards questioning the roster as far as making a sustained run in the playoffs.

“Going forward after this series, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ future is in question somewhat because of what Ant feels about the roster,” Windhorst reported. “I wonder if KAT was still there, if he did.”

A couple of years ago, the Timberwolves seemed on pace to be a leading contender in the Western Conference. After being eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs in back-to-back years, Edwards and Towns helped the team breakthrough and reach the Western Conference Finals in 2024.

Towns was ultimately traded right before the start of the 2024-25 season. Although the Wolves reached the conference finals again that year without Towns, with the emergence of teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs, there are questions as to what the Timberwolves’ new ceiling is.

Edwards is arguably a top-five player in the NBA currently. This past season he averaged career-high 28.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals with splits of 48.9 percent shooting from the field, 39.9 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 79.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line. But the present Wolves’ roster is not a contending group.
