Tigers news: Detroit 2B smacks second career homer off Mets’ Nolan McLean

The Detroit Tigers entered Sunday’s matchup against the New York Mets looking to avoid a sweep. Second baseman Gage Workman is doing everything is his power to ensure Tigers victory.

With runners on first and third in the top of the first inning, Workman hit a three-run shot off of Nolan McLean. It marked Workman’s second career home run at the MLB level.

His first home run came back on May 10 against the Kansas City Royals. With two home runs in four games, the second baseman has been a serious source of power over Detroit’s recent stretch. Entering Thursday’s game, Workman was hitting .286 with a pair of RBIs alongside his home run.

The infielder was originally drafted by the Tigers back in 2020. However, the Chicago Cubs selected him in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft. Workman was then traded to the Chicago White Sox before ultimately being designated for assignment and returned to the Tigers.

When Kerry Carpenter was forced to hit the injured list, Workman got another opportunity to perform at the major league level. So far, Workman has done admirably and will continue to try to prove he deserves to stay at the major league level.

During his six years at the minor league level, the infielder hit .252 with 76 home runs, 339 RBIs and 134 stolen bases. The Tigers will hope those numbers can translate to the major league level should he get a longer leash.

Workman at least proved his worth in a major way on Thursday. The Tigers have now squandered that hot start as the game was tied at five going into the bottom of the fifth. Perhaps the infielder will come through again to help end Detroit’s two-game losing streak.
