Tigers’ Kevin McGonigle makes jaw-dropping play to steal hit from Mets’ AJ Ewing

Early on in the 2026 season, Detroit Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle has been one of the best rookies in MLB. Recently called up New York Mets outfielder AJ Ewing is trying to make his own name for himself amongst the 2026 rookies.

However, on Thursday, it was McGonigle who go the best of Ewing. With a man on first and two outs in the bottom of the first, Ewing hit a pop fly to shallow left field. The Tigers shortstop ranged to his left and made the diving catch.

In the end though, Ewing and the Mets came out on top 9-4, sweeping the Tigers. Ewing played a big role in that victory, going 2-for-4 with the first home run of his major league career. New York will hope the rookie can continue to be a difference maker in the lineup and outfield for at least as long as Luis Robert Jr is on the shelf.

While McGonigle’s team came up short, the rookie infielder has provided a major spark to the Tigers overall. Heading into Thursday’s matchup, he was hitting .301 with two home runs, 16 RBIs and seven stolen bases. McGonigle led the team in stolen bases, ranked third on the team in batting average and tied for fifth in RBIs.

As the Tigers go throughout their season, all eyes will be on the rookie infield and his continued transition to MLB. The same goes for Mets and Ewing. Both squads are looking to find their way back into the playoffs. Their rookie contributors will be expected to play a major role in that quest.
