Tigers’ Kenley Jansen lost sleep over tense Curacao-Ecuador clash at World Cup
The Detroit Tigers have been a disappointment so far this year on the heels of last year’s playoff run, currently sitting at 32-44 on the 2026 MLB season ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Chicago White Sox. Trade rumors have been swirling around the Tigers all season, especially regarding star pitcher Tarik Skubal, who many teams would be willing to pay a hefty price to bring in.
Recently, Tigers closer Kenley Jansen spoke on why he didn’t get a ton of sleep on Saturday night as he watched his native Curacao play against Ecuador in the World Cup.
“I was surprised, man. I didn’t believe it until it got to 80 minutes. I was like, ‘Oh shoot, we might get a point here.’ … I couldn’t go to sleep, because my adrenaline was so up,” he said, per Jason Beck of MLB.com on X, formerly Twitter.
Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room nearly set a World Cup record with 15 saves during his country’s game against Ecuador, which ended up as a tied final score, earning a point for Curacao in the process.
Meanwhile, Jansen himself recorded a save earlier in the day during the Tigers’ win over the White Sox, continuing to move him up the all-time MLB leaderboard in that department.
While Jansen has been using his veteran experience to play some solid baseball as of late, the Tigers as a whole have performed far below expectations this season, and it remains to be seen if they will make any big moves this year as a result, with the entire MLB world seemingly waiting for some Skubal news to drop.
They will close out their series vs the White Sox on Sunday at 1:40 pm ET at home.
