Tigers announce roster move to make room for Tarik Skubal
As the Detroit Tigers have been dealing with pitching injuries, the team is getting back a huge piece to the rotation in star Tarik Skubal, who has recovered from surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow. With Skubal in a myriad of trade rumors with the Tigers, the focus is on getting back to an elite level currently, as the team has made another move to coincide with the much-anticipated return.
According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, Detrout has made the decision to send down Ty Maddeen as Skubal returns to the team. Regarding the injury to pitcher Jack Flaherty in Friday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians, the team is “in wait-and-see mode” as Hao-Yu Lee is with the team if the veteran has to go on the injured list (IL).
“Tigers have optioned Ty Madden to make room for Tarik Skubal,” Stavenhagen wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “They are in wait-and-see mode on Jack Flaherty, who is still getting evaluation from doctors. Hao-Yu Lee is here in the event Flaherty goes on the IL.”
More on the return of Tigers’ Tarik Skubal
Looking at Skubal, the back-to-back AL Cy Young award winner is looking to pick back up where he left off, as he recorded a 2.70 ERA to go along with 45 strikeouts and a 3-2 record in seven starts. Detroit manager A.J. Hinch described to the media what it will be like to have Skubal back in the picture.
“We’re adding the best pitcher in baseball back to our mix,” Hinch said, according to ESPN. “It’s hard to describe what that boost will be.”
Skubal would make one rehab start last Sunday, and it was enough for the Tigers to watch and determine he was ready to make a return to the majors. The 29-year-old felt good on his velocity, execution, and his ability to command pitches in the strike zone.
“I feel like I threw a ton of strikes. I was in the zone a lot today,” Skubal said on Sunday.
It remains to be seen how Skubal plays in his start on Saturday against the Guardians.
