Tigers’ AJ Hinch gets 1 game suspension after Framber Valdez incident

The Detroit Tigers have lost their last two games against the Boston Red Sox, and nothing has gone well. They placed both Tarik Skubal and Gleyber Torres on the injured list, with the former potentially out for months. Then, Tigers starter Framber Valdez was ejected from Tuesday’s game and suspended six games. Now, the Tigers will be without manager AJ Hinch for Wednesday’s game due to a suspension.

Hinch was not ejected from the game, but is now suspended as the league tries to send a message. Valdez hit Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story, allegedly on purpose, after allowing ten runs in 3+ innings. Valdez will miss a start due to the six-game suspension, and now Hinch will be out for the series finale.

This is not the first time that Hinch has been suspended as a manager. He was suspended for the entire 2020 season for his role in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. Hinch had already been fired by the Astros when that suspension was handed down. Once the suspension was lifted, he was hired by the Tigers and has been there ever since.

The Tigers are 18-19 on the season, but are tied for the lead in the American League Central with the Cleveland Guardians. All of the American League, outside of the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays, is struggling to start this season. That mitigates the impact of the Tigers’ slide, but they do have to figure it out soon.

After facing the Red Sox, the Tigers have a day off before a road series with the Kansas City Royals. They have to prevail through the injuries and suspension to get back on track now. Otherwise, the Skubal trade conversations they worked so hard to avoid will be percolating by the time he returns.
