Thunder rumors: More evidence emerges to throw away all Giannis, Chet Holmgren trade scenarios
The Oklahoma City Thunder are a team that will have to make some moves this offseason for cap purposes, but some even think they may go big and acquire a star. In their loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the playoffs, Chet Holmgren didn’t have the best series, and with Giannis Antetokounmpo being available, rumors of a swap between the two have come up.
For the Thunder, they don’t plan on making that trade swap, and NBA insider Jake Fischer was the latest to share why.
“As much as the idea of Oklahoma City splurging for Giannis to counter Wemby might make sense on paper, league sources with knowledge of the Thunder’s thinking continue to dismiss them as a legitimate Antetokounmpo suitor,” Fischer said.
“The Thunder obviously have the draft capital and an abundance of talented young players to get Milwaukee’s attention, but it’s wise in times like these to consider Sam Presti’s history,” Fischer continued. “Presti is hardly known for paying exorbitant trade costs to bolster his roster … let alone for an older newcomer like Antetokounmpo would be at 31.”
Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints also mentioned the idea of a possible trade of Antetokounmpo, but he noted that it’s hard to see that happen, especially with the Milwaukee Bucks’ star wanting to stay in the Eastern Conference.
The Thunder aren’t going to make a trade in desperation, and everyone knows how Sam Presti operates in these moments.
“In consulting with various rival executives in the wake of Oklahoma City’s Game 7 loss at home to San Antonio in the Western Conference finals, I’ve yet to encounter any who strongly believe that Sam Presti would pursue such a dramatic move in response to the defending champions’ dethroning,” NBA insider Marc Stein wrote.
Things can change at any moment, but as of now, it looks like the Thunder are going to stick with their big 3 and keep building along the margins.
