The silver lining in the Royals’ slow offensive start

It’s been a slow start for the Kansas City Royals’ offense, as the club owns the sixth-worst batting average as a team (.221) and tied third for the least amount of runs scored (54 with the Cincinnati Reds). Despite the issues, a silver lining may be present that suggests things could turn around in a big way for the organization this season.

A stat regarding Bobby Witt Jr. shows just how poorly things are going for the Royals’ offense. Although he has reached base 28 times and leads MLB in stolen bases (8) through 16 games played, he has only reached home to score once, according to Chance Liebau.

The Royals have played 16 games. Bobby Witt Jr. has reached base 28 times,” said Leibau. “He leads the league in stolen bases. Bobby Witt Jr. has touched home ONCE all season.”

Just an unfortunate fact that proves just how bad the Royals’ offense is right now. However, during a segment of “Talkin’ Baseball,” hosts Talkin’ Jake and Trevor Plouffe revealed that Witt’s teammates are actually hitting the ball with solid contact. It’s just that the balls are finding their way to the mitts of the opposing team. But it is an indicator that the offense could get rolling relatively soon.

“So, runners in scoring position has not been the Royals’ strong suit,” said Plouffe. “There are some arguments they are due. Cause they have been hitting the ball hard. They lead the majors in average exit [velocity], and they rank seventh with a 43% hard hit rate, but it hasn’t been translating into hits…

“But it is an indicator that things will turn around,” continued Plouffe. “If you’re pointing to a statistic that’s like, ‘Our offense should get going,’ it is how hard you hit the ball. There’s better days coming for the Royals.”

Kansas City will have a chance to get the offense rolling on Tuesday. The Royals are set to take on the Detroit Tigers in the first matchup of a three-game series on the road.
