The trading card market just delivered another headline moment, and this one centers on Kobe Bryant.

A rare 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Green card featuring Bryant sold for a staggering $3.15 million, setting a new benchmark for any standalone Bryant card, per ESPN. The purchase came from Alt, led by founder Leore Avidar, who has long chased this exact piece.

Avidar didn’t hold back when explaining the appeal.

“I’d argue this is the best Kobe Bryant card out there,” he said, pointing to its rarity and historical significance.

Why This Kobe Bryant Card Stands Alone

Collectors obsess over green Precious Metal Gems for a reason. Only the first 10 cards in each set carry that green finish, while the remaining 90 come in red. That puts this Bryant card in an ultra-exclusive tier, with just 10 ever produced.

Even among those, scarcity deepens. Only three have received grades from Professional Sports Authenticator, widely viewed as the gold standard in the hobby. This particular card holds a PSA 5 grade, with just one graded higher.

That combination of rarity, condition, and legacy drove the price past previous milestones. Before this sale, the highest known price for a Bryant-only card sat at $2.4 million in a private deal last year. Another version of the same green PMG card fetched $2 million in 2022.

The surge reflects a broader trend in high-end collectibles, where iconic athletes and limited production runs collide. Bryant’s legacy continues to resonate, and pieces tied to his early career carry added weight.

For Alt, this purchase fits a pattern. The company has invested heavily in elite sports cards before, including a multi-million dollar stake in a Stephen Curry rookie Logoman.

Now, Bryant’s name leads the market again, this time through one of the rarest cards ever created.
